i've been thinking a lot about the quick passage of summer and along with it, all of the warm weather things i wanted to do and didn't - swim in the ocean, camp in the woods, picnic in the park. a vermonter living in southern california, i miss green things - big, broad leaves forming giant, glowing, green canopies filled with birds and bugs. i miss tall, wild grass and imperfect, unruly wildflowers.
because i tend to pick up on the uncomfortable aspects of life a bit more quickly than the luxuries, i see artificiality and constructed nature everywhere, every day. i was introduced to radiohead when i moved to los angeles. their song fake plastic trees sounded like as good an anthem as any for this place, especially for an actor with a penchant for poetic misanthropy.
selections from los angeles and las vegas.
