i've done it! after much culling, designing, and editing, i have compiled my 2011 work into a magazine with writing contributions from some seriously talented artists. you can preview the entire magazine at the link below. digital and print versions are available for purchase. i got mine in the mail today and am super impressed by the quality of the paper and printing.

lady crystal & sir emilio
when a friend asked me if i would be available to shoot a renaissance-style, middle-of-nowhere wedding, i said yes before even looking at my calendar. i don't shoot a lot of weddings - maybe because they're so predictable - white dress, swearing to god, tight shoes, chicken or fish, and a million combinations of family poses where everyone's expected to be told to "SMILE!" for the picture. i feel beholden to produce WEDDING pictures - bride looking virginal by the window, ring glinting in the sun; the barefoot wedding party jumping up in the air together on a beach at sunset; blurry vignettes, impossibly perfect skin, and a really old car to pose with, if possible.
the wedding of crystal and emilio was truly unique, a thousand percent genuine, and a privilege to document. it helped that the bride and groom aren't young adults, swayed by preconceived notions of what's acceptable or expected. everyone i met was overwhelmingly open, generous, and buckets of fun.
there were relentless mega-high winds that tore down the guests' tents and kept the cow from being spit-roasted over an open fire. i had tears streaming down my cheeks all day from keeping my eyes open in the wind to take pictures. the tent where the ceremony was held shook and rattled and flapped, but none of it seemed to bother anyone. i was reminded of the whos in whoville after the grinch has taken away all their presents and baubles. they gather together, hold hands, and sing their cute ass song. because what matters are people and community, not a perfectly executed schedule of events. this was the spirit of the wedding and i hope like hell i did it some justice.

hauntings
i've been meaning to post these apparitions for a few weeks, but then the ghost of christmas present came and confounded my course of action.

remnants of occupants past
i was downtown today, taking pictures of courthouses for a web campaign, and decided to see what city hall was looking like post-occupy. it was an overcast, cold afternoon, which makes downtown's sterile grey concrete architecture look downright dull, if not a smidge sinister. city hall, like many other public spaces downtown, is surrounded by newly-erected industrial fencing and barricades. the park around the building looks like the bastard death star child of post-woodstock. no people, lots of mud, and the kind of quiet that comes after something epochal has happened to many people at once.
on november 30th, 292 protesters were arrested in the city hall camp shutdown. there is a disturbing account of that experience here. it seems i've captured echoes of the voices of those citizens who stood together against grievous injustices in order to protect our rights and secure our fleeting freedoms. it is the very least i can do.

| DISCENT IS PATRIOTIC. i would like to think that this glorious poetic mashup of dissent and descent on the city hall steps was deliberate. |

criminal couture: forbidden fashion
i covered the ingenious and inspired collection of criminal couture at the bootleg theatre, one of my favorite venues to shoot theatre, music, fashion, and beautiful people. all designs were made from stolen, recycled, and found materials.
